What is Counselling/Psychotherapy?
Counselling/Psychotherapy is a process giving you space and time to explore your feelings and thoughts about issues that are causing you emotional pain or discomfort. I will actively listen and understand (empathise) how you feel, then help you work through these difficult feelings in a safe and supportive way. You will usually have come requiring help with a specific problem; although not always. Either way, we will define what you wish to overcome and change, and create a plan to assist you to get there. This ‘traditional’ type of counselling is focussed, planned and organised in its structure. It is a process with a beginning, middle and end, which requires focus and commitment. All methods and goals are agreed upon between us both.
How Can Counselling/Psychotherapy Help?
Using tried and tested methods I can help you better understand how events in your life have shaped you as a person and contributed to your feelings, reactions and behaviour. From a detached perspective, I can see patterns and links in your life that shape how you behave and what you think. My job is to help you to understand these patterns, modify them and ultimately enable you to lead a more fulfilling and productive life. Contrary to popular belief, a counsellor does not give you answers or advice, instead we can help you find the right solutions for yourself.
Can Counselling/Psychotherapy Help Everyone?
Counselling is a ‘relationship’ of sorts and as such, requires work and input from both parties to be successful. Often people mistakenly believe that a counsellor will ‘fix’ them, provide advice and answers to their problems, but this is not the case. Your motivation, desire to change and willingness to be honest and open, are all vital to the counselling process. I cannot do anything for you or to you; I can only work with you.
How long will therapy last? How much will it cost?
Sessions take an hour and usually run on a weekly basis, but this will extend as your therapy progresses. At your first free consultation, I should be able to give you a more precise idea as to how long we may need, but on the whole it will usually take between 12 - 16 sessions.
Your initial consultation is free; after that each hourly session is £50. Telephone counselling is offered for those who are unable to come to my office due to time constraints, disability or distance. Please remember flexible payment plans are available, please ask if you feel this may be necessary.
